Roll-a-ball Final Project!

Roll-a-ball Final Project!
http://www.kongregate.com/games/miketullo95/michael-tullo-gdd-200-final-project_preview

My final Roll-a-ball project consisted of 3 levels of collecting a certain about of red cubes throughout the different levels. Once you collect all of the cubes in the level the player is teleported to the next level. Once you complete the third and final level you have finished the game!

Level 1: This is the first level. Its pretty simple, its just a square with 8 cubes for the player to collect. But be careful, if you go to fast you might fly off the walls and fall forever. Once you collect all the cubes you go onto the second level.

Level 2: This is the second level. Pretty common to the first level, however ahead there is a new area to collect more cubes. There is a total of 12 cubes on this level and once you collect all the cubes you go on to the final level, level 3.

Level 3: This is the final level. This level is completely different from the other level. For this, I used the terrain tool and made like a snowy mountain level. Again, like all the other levels, collect all the 12 red cubes throughout the level and you win the game!

This is a screenshot of the code used in the game and shows the little things that I had to change around to make the game that I wanted. I had to switch around the loadLevel code so the levels would correctly link together when you finished the game. Also I cleaned up all the game instruction that was in the GUI so it was grammatically correct and I took out the "hit the esc key to quit the game" because that did not work.

2D RPG: The Story / Playing the Game

The story of my RPG is based around a kid looking for his parents in the arctic mountains. The main character stumbles across this town where bystanders say they saw two people wondering as if they are lost. Throughout the game, the main character will go through obstacles and terrifying bosses in an attempt to find his mother and father.

The game starts off in this little house where this nice old lady lets the main character sleep for the night. As you can see, the old lady is consoling you, and saying that you will find your parents soon. In the chest you find 10 coins and an extra heart.

As you go through the town. It is obvious that word has spread about you looking for your parents...

With only your ice pick in hand, you decided to venture in the first cave. The guards tell you this cave is pretty much a dead end, however it is a good training area. The caves more southern are much harder and require powerful weapons that you must obtain before entering.

Those guards were right, these monster aren't too hard, but if there is any rise in difficulty, you will need better weapons. After killing a couple of ice blobs and ice bats you collect a good amount of money.

After getting a good amount of money, and buying snowballs, and the magic wand, you are ready for the new area. Before you enter, the guard warns you that he has never seen someone return form going into that cave. With full health and a good amount of weapons, you are ready.

Before attempting the yeti boss, the guard would like to warn you that he has never lost a battle. Even with this warning you still power through and challenge King Yeti. This is all for your parents.

King Yeti has been defeated! Time to move on to the final monster area in the attempt to find your long lost parents!

Before even seeing the final boss, the mobs before him is already really overwhelming. There are about 25 bats running rampant. This is going to take a lot of time and kiting around the area to even clear up to the final boss.

You did it! You cleared all the bats up to the final boss which is a giant ice bat. With the final room in your site you are more prepared than ever to be hopefully reunited with your parents.

Bat boss down! You killed the hardest boss in the whole mountain! The final cave is right there and you are about to walk through, you have been dreaming of this day. Who will be on the other side? Only one way to find out...

And there it is! You found your parents! Its all over. Thank you for playing my game and I hope it was as enjoyable as it was making it. Thanks for playing.

2D RPG Project: What I changed.

Main Character:  This was the very first thing I changed in the RPG maker. Since my game was to be set in the arctic mountains, I decided to give my character a South Park style hat. I did not change any of his clothes because I felt as if the dark red actually looked really good with the upcoming changes I did to the "grass".

Grass to Ice: The first thing that came to mind to change the whole game to make it feel as if you were actually in the arctic mountains would be the ground. Originally there was grass that consumed most of the ground in the game. I took the grass file into photoshop, painted the whole thing light blue. After that I did 1px darker spots of blue to make the illusion that the ground is covered in snow and ice. Overall I really liked how the ground looked after everything was done.

Snow on Terrain: Since this game is placed deep in the arctic mountains I wanted to have the trees, bushes, and rocks covered in snow. So I took the files of those assets and colored the top of the images with a very light blue to give it the look of fresh snow.

Rocks: Before, these rocks were an ugly brown or dark grey color. So to make it looks more appealing and to fit with the theme of the game I changed it to a dark blue and did a little more work on the shading than the default prefabs had. One extra thing I had to change, which you unfortunately cant tell from this screenshot is the stuff beyond the rocks was still that ugly brown color. So to change that I had to go into the main camera setting and change that color to the same one as the mountain.

Houses (outside): The original roofs of the houses were a very similar color to the new rocks that I changed into the game. I felt as if there was too much repetition with the dark blue color so I completely went in a different direction. For some reason I tried green and it actually looked pretty good. Same deal as before, the front of the houses was an ugly brown so I switched it with a light gray to make it look like stone.

Houses (inside): I did not change much in the houses. The one thing that bothered me about it was the walls were a really bright grey looking color. Only thing I did was change the wall color to a slightly darker color which gave it a much calmer look to it.

Monsters: The RPG maker came with 3 monsters, including the stone monster, the bat, and the blob. Again, with everything, I changed all three of the monster to go along with the theme of the arctic mountain setting. I changed the stone monsters into a yeti type creature, then I changed the bat into an ice bat, and finally I changed                                                       the blog to a ... ice blob. Maybe better names are in order.

Weapons: The original weapons in the RPG maker was the sword, the bow, and the magic wand. I changed the sword into an ice pick, and took out the bow all together and made the projectiles snowballs. Finally I actually did not change the magic wand because I really liked the idea of it and decided to keep it.
The Town: Other than all the re skins going into effect, the main things I changed in the town include, the entrance to the new area's, the new road, the new house, and a lot more trees. The entrance leads to the default monster area which is a dead end. However, the exit on the very bottom of the town leads to the whole rest of the game. This includes a ton of monsters, new bosses, and the end objective of my game.

Monster Area #1: This is the default monster area that came with the RPG maker. I did not change anything because I thought it would be a good training area for the player to go through, get money for new weapons, and get a feel for the game. The player will need this experience to go through the rest of the game and it is very necessary.

Monster Area #2: This is a brand new monster area that I created. To enter this area, the player must go through the southern cave in the main town. This area includes the ice blob boss, a pack of yeti's with a chest, and finally the yeti boss. There is a guard right before the yeti boss warning the player that the yeti has never lost a fight before, and the room behind him is completely unknown.

Monster Area #3: This is the final monster area that I created. This area includes a massive amount of ice bats everywhere. If the player is able to even clear the area they will find themselves against the final boss, which is a huge ice bat. Past that door behind the huge ice bat is the players goal.

Final Area: This is the last area the player will get to. It's a very simplistic area but it includes the main goal the player was looking towards achieving. After the dialog with the NPC's the player is done and the game is beaten.

Wk01 RPG demo response

Our first assignment for GDD200 was to play one of the unity RPG demo's and review the game and discuss what you would change or make better. The game started out a little slow and the dialog was going by at a very slow rate and I immediately started to lose interest in the game. However, I started to catch on the more I played. One of the things that I noticed is that even though the game has items, it does not have any armor or weapon options, at least not yet. The combat was pretty good but my main concern was the demo just ended, I didn't have the feeling that I was left off wanted to complete the game, which I think is a pretty big concern.

test blog

blog is a weird word.
